Belagavi is one of the oldest, strong, prominent and well-cultured historical place nestling high in the Western Ghats. Lying in the zone of cultural transition between Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa, Belagavi has acquired the cultural flavor of these states and blended it with the local Kannada culture to create a rich heritage, which is unique in its manifestation.

Belagavi is popularly known as The Hydraulic Capital of the Nation houses thousands of Small and Medium scale hydraulic industries at its foundry cluster area which manufacture and export various entities across the nation and the globe and plays a vital role in building the Country’s economy at the grassroots. India’s first Aerospace Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is set up in the city to cater to the precision engineering requirements of the global aerospace, automotive and industrial verticals.

With the change in times the city has emerged popularly in various sectors like Education, Healthcare, Defense, Hospitality, Exports etc. Belagavi houses the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) and Commando Training Wing which is  a part of the Junior Leaders mandatory training. It also houses an Air-force Station and Indo – Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) training centre in Belgaum at Halbhavi making it a major defense hub. Belagavi is considered as the second capital city for the state of Karnataka and hosts the Legislative building named as Suvarna Vidhana Soudha where the winter session of the legislative assembly is conducted annually.

Belagavi Smart City Limited BSCL commenced on 11.05.2016, has taken up 102 projects covering various sectors such as Healthcare, Education, Environment & Wellbeing, Social & Other Infrastructure Projects, Information & Technology, Road Infrastructure, Transportation etc. The city has improved the quality of life for its citizens. Further, a total of 96 projects are completed achieving an overall physical progress of about 90%. These projects are functional and largely appreciated by the users. As a proof several projects taken up by BSCL have won laurels such as United Nations Smart Solutions and Inclusive Cities Awards 2022, Smart & Successful Inclusive City Award, Smart & Successful Tech Implementation Award, Smart & Successful Citizen Engagement Award and ISAC Zonal Smart City Award (South Zone) 2022 for city less than 10 lakhs population.

 Overall physical progress

Belagavi Smart City Limited has planned and executed all its projects with a vision of easing the urban life with best possible urban solutions and services to the citizens of Belagavi. Over hundred projects proposed, planned, and executed on Area Based Development (ABD) and PAN city basis have greatly influenced the life of the citizen of Belagavi. All the projects taken up by BSCL have become not just the milestones in the city’s development map but also are applauded loudly by the users. Several of these projects are replicated in various parts of the state and the nation. Some of these flagship projects are Development of Digital Library & Kids Zone, Development of Mahatma Phule Garden, Rejuvenation of Kanabargi Lake, Integrated Command & Control Centre, Mahila Market and NMT Hawker’s zone – Khau Katta, Health Sector projects such as Modular OT work at BIMS, Trauma centre – Ambulance, MICU work at BIMS, Construction of 30 Bed & 10 Bed Maternity Hospital and many more.

A state of the art facility of the Digital Library and Kid zone provides conventional reading rooms, digital library and study rooms along with wi-fi and numerous study materials for competitive exams at no cost. The facility is used by hundreds of students and aspirants on daily basis resulting in positive outcomes. This library facilitates readers to avail access to books in five languages viz. English, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi and Urdu. Further, kid zone offers cognitive skill

measurement, monitoring and management have been a part of the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) / National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Manuals apart from the measurement, monitoring and management of weight and height.

The Mahatma Phule Garden aims to provide comprehensive facilities for uplifting specially abled children. The dedicated park is designed with Inclusiveness as the main feature which aims to ease the life of children by providing them with both indoor and outdoor facilities for therapy and recreation. The park currently caters to 8054 specially abled students, utilizing various sensory modalities like touch, smell, sound, sight, and taste. Over 20,000 units of therapies are conducted till date at no cost.

The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) is an integral part of the Smart City Project. In addition to handling exceptions and handling disasters, the ICCC is envisioned as the brain of city operations. Various utilities such as water, waste management, energy, mobility, education, healthcare, and safety, can be monitored and analyzed using sensors and edge devices. Services such as Solid Waste Management (SWM), Emergency Services (Ambulance & Fire Engine), Intelligent Transport System (ITS), Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), Intelligent Pole, Smart Water, Mobile Application, LED Street Lights (Future integration), SCADA system for water supply  (Future integration) are operated and managed efficiently using ICCC.

The Mahila Market – Khau Katta is a must visit spot in the city of Belagavi to enjoy street food with the best hygiene. Women are running a whole new economy of Rs. 58 Cr. Coming in next 30 years. The project now popularly named as ‘Khau Katta’ has about 56 mini food stalls serving a variety of Indian delicacies. Being the first ever built attractive food and shopping hub in north Karnataka this project is being replicated at several cities of the state and of the nation.
